There are two parts to any great social media post, the image and the content. Get these right and you will attract comments, likes and traction.

But what makes a great post? Here are my 5 tips to help you crack the code.

1. Each social media platform is different. Some you can write long posts, such as LinkedIn and Facebook, others restrict you to a certain number of characters, like Twitter. Pinterest allows long images, other networks have a limited size. Instagram allows 30 hashtags (and it pays to use all 30!), whereas, with Facebook, it is best to use between 3 to 5.

2. Share your posts at different times of the day. All platforms have peak traffic times, but use wisely and don’t dismiss the quieter times.

3. Content is still your number one! However, people don’t necessarily have long attention spans when it comes to social media, however, it does depend on where you are posting. My tip is to restrict your longer articles to your blog and use snippets of it to post on the social platforms with a link back. This, not only gives you a backlink but encourages people to go to your website to continue reading. Shorter posts perform better.

4. Images. Make sure the image helps to tell the story. It’s usually what is seen first. With Facebook, you have the option of a Post image or a Link image. If your blog has a ‘featured image’ then this should automatically pop up, but if you’ve written an article without one, then Facebook will grab the nearest image it can find and sometimes this may not even relate

My suggestion is to always use a Post image, it is more dramatic and can be tailored to the content. Simply add the link to the written post.

5. Be visible. Every so often post something personal, people love to find out what’s behind the name. These platforms are ‘social’ after all. Even go outside the box and post information you have come across. As long as it is relevant to your message, it doesn’t hurt to add other types of posts than just your business.

Social media can certainly be worked to your advantage. Join relevant groups and be active within them, post at least once each day on your page and using a scheduler is a great option for this.
