Blogging is a brilliant way to keep your website current. But there is a lot more you can achieve if you write a blog consistently.

In 2021 how often should you write your blog? This is a serious question, and the answer isn’t exactly straightforward.

This post will be looking at this question from the point of view of someone starting a new blog. In saying that, if you already have an existing blog that has been languishing in the ether, you may get some good ideas to bring it back to life.

To begin with, you need to ascertain precisely what you want to achieve from your blog.

Do you want:

  • to use it for SEO purposes?
  • it to inform/inspire your followers?
  • to improve your writing skills?
  • to build your online brand?
  • to generate an income?
  • to become an authority in your field?
  • to boost your social media efforts?
  • Combinations of any of the above.

As you can see, there are many different reasons to have a blog, and each one comes with its own set of writing frequencies.

Here are the three main reasons:

  1. Driving traffic to your website.
  2. Offering valuable content to your readers.
  3. Building your brand.

Each will determine how often you should write your blog. In saying that, there is always flexibility and no hard and fast rules.

Driving traffic to your website:

You are writing for SEO purposes. (SEO is search engine optimisation.) Search engines like Google, Yahoo and Bing, send out bots (robots) that crawl over websites looking for content. The URLs (address of posts/pages) are stored and used when someone searches for it (a very simplistic description). If a website isn’t offering new content, the bots think it is not being used and will put the URLs way down the list.

This is where a blog becomes very useful. By continually posting, the bots can see that the website is current and is offering new content that the searchers may want.

Please note: There is more involved with SEO, such as the post itself being structured in a particular way for the bots to take notice.

The more posts you do, the better. It is hard work but done correctly, it can pay dividends.

Ultimately write a post each day. If you can’t manage that, you need to be writing 3 to 4 times a week, and you want to have written and published at least 100+ posts just to get off the mark. Once you have established yourself and your website has ‘aged’, you can reduce the number. The minimum would be once a month.

Aim your posts towards your target audience and write content that you know they will be looking for.

Offering valuable content to your readers:

People love reading informative blogs. If you write good, current posts, you will get your readers coming back.
And great content can be a boost on your social media using the post as fodder on different platforms. It is another way to draw new eyes to your website.

These blog posts can be as many as you want, but at least 1 or 2 a week. When people find you and like what they read, they often will bookmark your site and come back. If they don’t see a new post, they probably will just not bother returning after a couple of attempts. Once you have an email list of followers, you can reduce the number of posts, but always be consistent.

Building your brand:

Using your blog to become an authority in your field is an excellent marketing tool. As you get established and offer sound advice to potential customers/clients, you will find that your readers will be more likely to do business with you than your competition.

These posts must be full of value and offer the reader answers to common questions and industry trends.
A minimum of once a week.

Other:

  • Your blog post doesn’t have to be long. It is more important to write succinctly and give value. Remember the old saying, quality over quantity wins.
  • Choose a manageable number of posts you can write per week and stick to it. Be consistent!

There is no hard and fast rule as to how often you should write a blog, but the rule of thumb that works best for most bloggers is twice a week.
