FaceBook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, Weibo. Pinterest and the numbers go on. In fact, in 2021, there are so far over 103 social media platforms out there waiting for people to get hooked.

You’ve probably heard of the ones listed here, although Weibo may be new to you. The point is how important is Social Media for your business, and do you need it?

First, you need to identify your business and if you need to be online. I can tell you that, no matter what your business is, having an online presence is crucial if you want to attract customers/clients.

We have been phasing out the traditional ‘Yellow pages’; they are now online. Newspaper advertising is still around, and the classified part is excellent for the one-person type of business that doesn’t need to be overwhelmed with customers. However, having a website attached to the advertisement will make for more eyes seeing you even with traditional advertising. Many times a person wants more information and will head to the website to find it. If there is no website, the prospective customer will bypass your business.

Now comes Social Media. To answer the question, is Social Media important? The short answer is Yes!

However, it doesn’t mean that you have to be everywhere. It is more important for you to pick two to three platforms, and these will depend on the type of business you have.

  • For service orientated businesses, the two leading platforms are Facebook and LinkedIn.
  • For product orientate businesses, the top two platforms are Facebook and Instagram.

Another platform that is worth considering for products is Pinterest. This particular platform is very good at driving traffic to websites.

The point of Social Media is to be VISIBLE, establish your brand and be in front of prospective customers/clients.

Facebook is the primary business builder, and here is a major tip:

Get yourself into groups! Yes, that’s right. Groups are much more influential than business pages. You still need a business page, but being ‘social’ in groups will establish you as an expert in your field.

And just so you know, Weibo’s full name is Sina Weibo, and it’s out of China. It is similar to Twitter, and many journalists, public figures and celebrities hang out here. The text is up to 2,000 characters, and, of course, you can add videos, images and music along with comments and private message. Should you be on it? There are about 550 million active users. As a business, you can claim your personal hashtag, which increases brand awareness. However, unless your business is geared towards China, then it’s not one I would recommend.
