Today I’m going to show you how to SEO the right way. If you’re not doing it correctly, you won’t be found.

SEO (search engine optimisation) is an essential part of your blog, article or page content. If you’re not doing it the right way, then the likes of Google, Bing and Yahoo won’t bring you up in the results. And that means searchers won’t see you.

Let’s bust one myth. SEO is not just about keywords. Yes, they are necessary, and their placement throughout the text is important, but they are not the be-all and end-all of your optimisation.

Keywords (word or phrase) needs to be in a few places besides the text. It should be in the URL (website/post address) of the post and the title. It also needs to be within the first 100 words of the text.

The trick to keywords is to make them as natural as possible within the text. They have to make sense within the framework, so don’t just shove them in all higgledy piggedly.

Another excellent SEO hack is to keep your readers on your website as long as you can. The worst thing that can happen is when a user clicks onto your site after searching using your keywords and immediately clicks back to the search again. This action is called pogosticking – yes, it has a name!!!

What that does is tell Google that it doesn’t like what it found on your site – and Google considers that with your site rankings. If it happens too often, you’ll be downranked.

Go through your website and delete any pages that don’t get visitors. If a page is not viewed, it’s called a “Zombie” and is of little use. Google likes current websites, with pages getting viewed. In fact, Google generally prefers one stronger page versus many smaller pages.

The next thing you want to aim for is backlinks. These are inbound links coming from another website to your page.

For example, above, I have given the website SeroundTable.com a backlink by using one of their pages as a reference for you to go and read.

What I want is for websites to link to my information. Google looks on these as “votes” from others that you have good content. The more backlinks you get, the higher up in the organic search rankings you’ll go.

How to get these links is another post entirely. I’ve not written one as yet, but feel free to pop over to BackLinko.com and read up on their article.

You can do several other things to SEO the right way, such as making sure any images you have are set with your keyword.

And one last tip, if you have a WordPress website, install the free plugin Yoast SEO because it gives you an analysis of your post and shows you where you can improve.
